When you've got a family that actually uses the living room, the sofa tends to bear the brunt of it. Film nights with everyone piled on, the kids taking up more space than seems physically possible, the dog claiming one end as his own. A 4 seater is the one that fits all of that without anyone being left on the floor or perched on the arm. It's a meaningful step up from a 3 seater, both in the space it fills and in what it can do for a room, and for households where the living room is genuinely lived in, it tends to pay for itself in comfort pretty quickly.
The 4 seater sofas here include electric recliner models in fabric and faux leather, built for households where the living room is where everyone ends up at the end of the day. They come with the same motorised recliner mechanisms as the 3 seater sofas in the range, with the extra width giving four adults room to sit properly rather than making do. The full sofas collection is worth browsing if you're still deciding between a straight sofa, a 4 seater, and a corner configuration.
Finance is available on many products, subject to status, which is worth knowing when a 4 seater is often one of the bigger investments in a living room. We deliver free across the UK, and if you'd like to see any sofas in person before you commit, our Manchester showroom gives you the chance to sit on them properly before you buy. Get in touch at any point if you'd like a recommendation.

What's in this collection

The 4 seater sofas here are primarily electric recliner models, available in fabric and faux leather. The mechanism works across the width of the sofa, with individual seats or both end seats reclining independently via a motorised button, so four people can each find a comfortable position without the sofa turning into a negotiation.

Fabric models are the most practical choice for everyday family use. The upholstery is soft and warm, reasonably forgiving with daily wear, and suits a room that sees real life. Faux leather is the easier-clean option. Spills wipe off the surface rather than soaking in, and pet hair doesn't embed in the same way as it does with woven fabric. It looks slightly more structured than fabric and suits a room with a slightly sharper aesthetic.

A 4 seater is a substantial piece of furniture and occupies considerably more floor space than a 3 seater in both its upright and fully reclined positions. It's worth being clear about that before you browse. If the room genuinely suits it, it's an excellent sofa. If the room is more marginal, a 3 seater sofa with an armchair, or a corner configuration, may serve you better without dominating the space.

Choosing the right size and fit

A 4 seater sofa typically runs from around 230 to 260cm wide, depending on the model. That's the width in its upright position. For a recliner, the relevant measurement is the fully extended footprint: when the footrests are out and the backrests are tilted, a 4 seater recliner occupies a considerably deeper floor area than the seated width alone suggests. Add at least 40 to 50cm to the depth when planning the room layout, and make sure there's enough clearance behind the backrest for it to tilt freely. A sofa pushed against a wall won't recline properly.

Floor space in front of the sofa is the other consideration. You need enough clear floor for four footrests to extend at once without reaching the coffee table or the wall opposite. If the room is shorter than it looks on a floor plan, it's worth marking out the fully reclined footprint with tape before you order.

Door widths and access routes matter more with a sofa this size than with smaller pieces. Measure the front door, the hallway width, and any corners the delivery team will have to navigate. If there's a staircase landing or a tight turn between the door and the room, let us know when you order. We'd rather think through the access before delivery day than deal with a problem on it.

Fabric or faux leather: what suits a busy household

On a sofa used by four people, the material question is practical rather than aesthetic. Both finishes have clear strengths and it's worth thinking honestly about how the sofa will actually be used.

Fabric is warmer to sit on and tends to feel more comfortable over a long evening. It holds its shape well with regular use and suits a room with an informal, lived-in quality. The limitation is cleaning: spills need to be caught quickly, fabric marks with certain foods and drinks, and pet hair works its way into the weave. Regular vacuuming keeps it looking decent, but fabric does require more maintenance than a smooth surface.

Faux leather is considerably more practical when easy cleaning is a genuine priority. You can wipe it down after a spill rather than having to blot and hope, and it doesn't attract or hold pet hair. It tends to feel cooler initially, particularly in colder months, and some people find it slightly less comfortable to sit on bare-legged in warm weather. Neither of those things is a dealbreaker, but they're worth factoring in. In a household with young children or a dog, faux leather earns its keep quickly on a sofa this well-used.

Spreading the cost

A 4 seater is a significant piece and a meaningful spend. Finance is available on many of our sofas, subject to status, which means you can spread the cost over an agreed period rather than paying for the whole thing upfront. That can make the difference between settling for a sofa that's close to right and buying the one that actually fits the room and the household properly. Ask us for details when you get in touch, or check the finance page before you order.

Why buy from Shawcross

We're a Manchester-based retailer and the showroom is where this kind of decision genuinely gets easier. A 4 seater recliner sofa is large enough that sitting in it, operating the mechanism, and judging the seat depth in person makes a real difference. You can't get that from a product image. Come in if you can.

For customers further afield, we deliver nationally across the UK, with sofas typically arriving within 28 days. If you have questions about dimensions, room fit, or whether a 4 seater or a corner configuration is the better answer for your specific room, get in touch. We'll give you a straight view based on what you tell us.

4 Seater Sofa FAQs

How big is a 4 seater sofa, and will it fit in my room?

A straight 4 seater typically runs from around 220 to 280cm wide, though this varies by design. Depth, usually between 90 and 110cm, matters as much as the width when you're working out how much floor space the sofa will occupy. As a working guide, allow at least 90cm of clear space between the front of the sofa and the nearest opposite surface for the room to feel comfortable in daily use.

Before ordering, measure the wall the sofa will sit against, the floor space in front of it, and the access route from your front door to the room. Hallway widths and door frames catch people out more often than the room itself. Send us your dimensions if anything looks borderline and we'll give you a straight answer.

Is a straight 4 seater better than a corner sofa?

It depends on the room. A straight 4 seater works well where you have a clear wall long enough to take it and good floor space in front. A corner sofa delivering the same seating capacity tends to use floor space more efficiently and creates a more defined seating area, which suits open-plan rooms particularly well.

The trade-off with a corner sofa is less flexibility if you want to rearrange the room later, and delivery access can be more demanding because the sections tend to be larger. If you're not sure which is right for your room, send us the layout and dimensions and we'll give you a recommendation.

What's the best fabric for a 4 seater in a family home?

For a household with children and pets, tighter weave fabrics tend to be the most practical choice. They handle marks and spills more forgivingly than velvet and are generally the most comfortable for long periods of use.

Leather and faux leather are the easiest to keep clean, with spills wiping off immediately and pet hair not embedding in the surface. Velvet looks and feels wonderful but is the most demanding option to maintain in a heavily used home, showing marks readily and flattening with consistent use in the same spots. Worth being honest about upkeep before you commit to it on a sofa this size.

I'm worried about getting a large sofa through my front door. What should I check?

Measure your front door width, any internal doors between the entrance and the room, hallway widths and any turns, and if you're on an upper floor, the staircase including the turn at the top. Many sofas arrive in sections specifically to help with access, but larger sections of a 4 seater can still be substantial. If you send us your access measurements we'll tell you whether a specific sofa is likely to get through before you order, rather than finding out on delivery day.

Can I spread the cost with finance?

Finance is available on many sofas at Shawcross, subject to status, with full details on each product page. If you have questions about how it works on a specific sofa before you order, get in touch and we'll talk you through it.

Do you deliver across the UK, and can I see the sofas in person?

Yes, delivery is free across the UK within 28 days of ordering. We'll contact you a week in advance to agree a convenient day and time. If you'd like to see and sit on sofas before buying, our Manchester showroom is open and genuinely worth the visit for a purchase of this size.
