Some rooms make the decision for you. If you've just had a kitchen refitted with gloss units, steel appliances, and clean contemporary lines, a dining set in a traditional finish tends to look like it belongs in a different house. Chrome suits these rooms well. The legs and frames carry the same finish language as the rest of the space, and the result feels considered rather than assembled from whatever was available.
Our chrome dining sets pair chrome legs and frames with a range of table top materials, and chairs in finishes that complete the look. They sit within our broader dining sets collection if you'd like to compare across other materials and styles. Sets are available in sizes to suit different households, from compact options for two upward.
Finance is available on many of our dining sets, subject to status. We deliver nationally across the UK, and our Manchester showroom is open if you'd like to see chrome dining sets in person before you order. For questions about what will work in your room, just get in touch.

What's in this collection

Chrome dining sets use chrome for the structural elements: the table legs or base, and usually the chair frames too. The table top itself varies. Glass is the most common pairing, and it works well with chrome because both materials are clean and light. Stone-effect and ceramic tops are also available in the collection, which gives a bit more weight and warmth to the overall look without losing the contemporary feel that chrome brings.

Chair designs vary across the collection. Some sets come with fully upholstered chairs with chrome legs; others have more minimal designs that keep the look lean and consistent. The chair seat and back material, whether fabric, velvet, or a harder finish, is worth thinking about carefully because it has a big effect on how formal or relaxed the overall set feels in the room.

Chrome dining sets in a family home

Chrome is a durable material for a dining set frame. It doesn't rust under normal indoor conditions, it doesn't warp, and it holds up to the kind of daily use a busy household puts it through. The legs and frames clean easily, which matters when the dining set is in regular use.

The honest thing to say about chrome is that it does show up marks. Fingerprints and smears are visible on chrome surfaces more readily than on a painted or powder-coated frame, and in a household with children, the chair legs in particular will need a regular wipe-down to stay looking their best. That's not a reason to avoid it, but it's useful to know before you decide.

The top material is where most of the day-to-day maintenance consideration sits. A chrome-framed set with a glass top will need the glass wiped after most meals. A stone-effect or ceramic top is more forgiving in that regard, and for a family table that's used every evening, it's worth thinking about which one you'll actually keep on top of rather than which one looks best in a photograph.

Chair upholstery adds another layer to the maintenance picture. A fabric or velvet seat in a contemporary pale colour looks clean and considered in the right room, but if you have young children or a dog with a habit of jumping up, the practical reality is different. A darker or wipe-clean seat tends to hold up better under that kind of use, without necessarily looking like a compromise.

Choosing the right size chrome dining set

Chrome dining sets are available across a range of seater counts. The right size for your household depends on how many people eat together regularly and whether you want room for guests without things feeling tight. Our 4 seater dining sets cover the most common family size; if you regularly seat more people or you have a larger room to fill, it's worth browsing by size to find the right fit.

Whatever size you're considering, the measuring guidance is the same: allow around 90cm of clearance between the edge of the table and the nearest wall or obstacle on all sides, and factor that into your available floor space before you decide on dimensions. If you'd like to check a specific set against your room measurements before ordering, get in touch and we'll work through it with you.

Spreading the Cost

Finance is available on many of our dining sets, subject to status. If the set you want sits above your immediate budget, spreading the cost is worth exploring. We're happy to talk through the options at any point.

Why buy from Shawcross

We're based in Manchester and our showroom is open if you'd like to see dining sets in person before buying. Chrome finishes in particular can look quite different in a showroom compared to product photography, and seeing the top material alongside the frame in natural light tends to settle decisions that photographs leave open.

We deliver nationally across the UK, and you can contact us at any stage for advice on room fit, chair options, or anything else before you order. Getting it right matters more than getting it done quickly.

Chrome Dining Set FAQs

What exactly is a chrome dining set, and how does chrome differ from other metal finishes?

Chrome in furniture refers to chromium plating applied over a base metal frame, most commonly steel. The result is a highly reflective, silver-toned surface with a bright, almost mirror-like quality. It's noticeably different from the other metal finishes you'll encounter in dining furniture. Brushed steel has a similar silver tone but a matt, directional texture that's less reflective and more understated. Black metal is increasingly common in contemporary furniture and reads as heavier and more graphic. Gold and brass finishes run warm where chrome runs cool.

The practical difference between these finishes matters in a room context as much as the aesthetic one. Chrome bounces light in a way that makes it feel present in a room regardless of the scale of the base. A relatively slim chrome pedestal on a round dining table will still register visually because of the way it reflects its surroundings. That can be a significant quality in a smaller room, but in a large room it can occasionally read as delicate if the overall set isn't substantial enough. It's worth thinking about scale as well as finish when you're choosing.

Is chrome a practical choice for a family dining room?

Chrome holds up well to everyday use as a base and leg finish. It doesn't corrode under normal indoor conditions, and the plating is durable enough for daily family life. The main practical consideration is that it marks. Fingerprints and smears show on a polished chrome surface more readily than on a matt finish, which means the legs and base of a chrome table will need wiping down after use more frequently than the equivalent in black metal or brushed steel. In a household with young children who touch the chairs when getting in and out, this is something you'll notice.

That said, it's a quick job. A soft damp cloth removes most marks in seconds. Chrome doesn't require specialist cleaning products and doesn't need the kind of ongoing maintenance that marble or natural wood surfaces demand. For most families the trade-off between the visual quality of the finish and the slightly more frequent cleaning it requires is one they're happy to make. Whether it's the right one for your household comes down to how much the appearance of the base matters to you day to day.

What surfaces pair well with a chrome base?

Chrome is a cooler, high-contrast finish, so it tends to pair most naturally with surfaces that either match its contemporary character or provide a deliberate visual contrast to it.

Sintered stone tops sit very naturally alongside chrome. Sintered stone is an engineered surface produced under heat and pressure, available in a range of tones including pale greys, whites and more graphic darker options. Its smooth, consistent finish and contemporary character are well matched to a chrome base.

Marble on a chrome base is a classic pairing in the Shawcross range, and it works because the veining and natural variation in the marble gives warmth and character that the chrome base doesn't provide on its own. Together they balance each other well.

Glass tops on chrome bases have been a staple of contemporary dining furniture for decades precisely because the transparency of the glass keeps the frame and base visible and the chrome can be appreciated as a design element in its own right rather than hidden beneath a solid surface.

Warmer, more natural surface materials like oak or solid wood tend to sit less naturally alongside chrome, where the contrast between the warmth of the wood and the cool of the finish can feel like a mismatched rather than a deliberate pairing. That said, interior design rules are not fixed, and if you're uncertain whether a combination works in your room, get in touch and we can give you an honest view.

How do I keep chrome legs and bases clean without damaging the finish?

The key rule is softness. Chrome plating is durable but it can be scratched by abrasive materials, and a scratched or dulled chrome surface is much harder to restore than one that's been kept clean regularly. Use a soft microfibre cloth and either plain warm water or a mild detergent for everyday cleaning. This removes fingerprints, dust and most food marks without any risk to the finish.

For marks that don't shift with water alone, a small amount of washing up liquid on a damp cloth works well. After cleaning, dry the surface with a separate clean cloth to prevent water spots. Avoid steel wool, abrasive cream cleaners or anything with a scouring texture. Limescale remover and products containing bleach or strong acids should also be avoided as these can affect the plating.

Chrome polish is available if you want to restore the maximum shine, particularly on older pieces or after a surface has been exposed to hard water marks over time. Apply it sparingly with a soft cloth and buff it off. It's not a routine requirement for a dining table in normal use, but it's worth knowing it's an option.

What size dining set do I need for my family?

The right size depends on how many people you seat regularly, how many you want to be able to accommodate when others join you, and how much room the dining area actually gives you.

For four people as the main use case, a table of around 1.2 to 1.4 metres works comfortably. For six, 1.6 to 1.8 metres is the more comfortable range, though a round table can often seat as many as a rectangular table of similar dimensions because there's no corner wasted at each end. For eight, you're typically looking at 2 metres or more in a rectangular format.

The space around the table is just as important as the table dimensions themselves. Allow around 80 to 90cm between the table edge and the nearest wall or furniture for chairs to pull out and for people to move in and out of their seats comfortably. In a kitchen diner where space is tighter, 70cm is workable but will feel snug when the table is full. Measure your available space, subtract that clearance on each usable side, and what's left is the maximum table footprint you can accommodate. If you'd like to talk through what size works for your specific room, send us the dimensions and we'll give you a direct answer.

Do you deliver chrome dining sets across the UK, and is there an assembly service?

Free delivery is included across the UK, with dining sets arriving within 28 days of ordering. We'll contact you a week before delivery to agree a day and time that suits you, so you're not waiting around on an open-ended window. The delivery team brings items to a room of your choice.

Assembly is available for an additional fee if you'd prefer not to put the set together yourself. This is worth arranging at the point of order rather than on delivery day. If you'd like to confirm assembly availability for a specific set before you buy, call us and we'll sort it. For those who can get to Manchester first, the showroom is the most reliable way to check that a set is right for your room before it arrives at your door.
