What's in this collection
The 4 seater sofas here are primarily electric recliner models, available in fabric and faux leather. The mechanism works across the width of the sofa, with individual seats or both end seats reclining independently via a motorised button, so four people can each find a comfortable position without the sofa turning into a negotiation.
Fabric models are the most practical choice for everyday family use. The upholstery is soft and warm, reasonably forgiving with daily wear, and suits a room that sees real life. Faux leather is the easier-clean option. Spills wipe off the surface rather than soaking in, and pet hair doesn't embed in the same way as it does with woven fabric. It looks slightly more structured than fabric and suits a room with a slightly sharper aesthetic.
A 4 seater is a substantial piece of furniture and occupies considerably more floor space than a 3 seater in both its upright and fully reclined positions. It's worth being clear about that before you browse. If the room genuinely suits it, it's an excellent sofa. If the room is more marginal, a 3 seater sofa with an armchair, or a corner configuration, may serve you better without dominating the space.
Choosing the right size and fit
A 4 seater sofa typically runs from around 230 to 260cm wide, depending on the model. That's the width in its upright position. For a recliner, the relevant measurement is the fully extended footprint: when the footrests are out and the backrests are tilted, a 4 seater recliner occupies a considerably deeper floor area than the seated width alone suggests. Add at least 40 to 50cm to the depth when planning the room layout, and make sure there's enough clearance behind the backrest for it to tilt freely. A sofa pushed against a wall won't recline properly.
Floor space in front of the sofa is the other consideration. You need enough clear floor for four footrests to extend at once without reaching the coffee table or the wall opposite. If the room is shorter than it looks on a floor plan, it's worth marking out the fully reclined footprint with tape before you order.
Door widths and access routes matter more with a sofa this size than with smaller pieces. Measure the front door, the hallway width, and any corners the delivery team will have to navigate. If there's a staircase landing or a tight turn between the door and the room, let us know when you order. We'd rather think through the access before delivery day than deal with a problem on it.
Fabric or faux leather: what suits a busy household
On a sofa used by four people, the material question is practical rather than aesthetic. Both finishes have clear strengths and it's worth thinking honestly about how the sofa will actually be used.
Fabric is warmer to sit on and tends to feel more comfortable over a long evening. It holds its shape well with regular use and suits a room with an informal, lived-in quality. The limitation is cleaning: spills need to be caught quickly, fabric marks with certain foods and drinks, and pet hair works its way into the weave. Regular vacuuming keeps it looking decent, but fabric does require more maintenance than a smooth surface.
Faux leather is considerably more practical when easy cleaning is a genuine priority. You can wipe it down after a spill rather than having to blot and hope, and it doesn't attract or hold pet hair. It tends to feel cooler initially, particularly in colder months, and some people find it slightly less comfortable to sit on bare-legged in warm weather. Neither of those things is a dealbreaker, but they're worth factoring in. In a household with young children or a dog, faux leather earns its keep quickly on a sofa this well-used.
Spreading the cost
A 4 seater is a significant piece and a meaningful spend. Finance is available on many of our sofas, subject to status, which means you can spread the cost over an agreed period rather than paying for the whole thing upfront. That can make the difference between settling for a sofa that's close to right and buying the one that actually fits the room and the household properly. Ask us for details when you get in touch, or check the finance page before you order.
Why buy from Shawcross
We're a Manchester-based retailer and the showroom is where this kind of decision genuinely gets easier. A 4 seater recliner sofa is large enough that sitting in it, operating the mechanism, and judging the seat depth in person makes a real difference. You can't get that from a product image. Come in if you can.
For customers further afield, we deliver nationally across the UK, with sofas typically arriving within 28 days. If you have questions about dimensions, room fit, or whether a 4 seater or a corner configuration is the better answer for your specific room, get in touch.
