The conversation about marble dining sets tends to follow the same path. Someone has been looking at them for months, possibly longer. They love the look and they keep coming back to it. Then they think about the children, the spilled orange juice, the hot pan coming off the hob, and they talk themselves out of it. Then they look again. The honest answer is that marble is a genuinely beautiful material for a dining table and a more demanding one to live with than most other surfaces. Whether that trade-off works for your household depends on some specifics, and it's worth understanding them before you decide either way.

Our marble dining sets sit within our broader dining sets collection and are available in a range of sizes and configurations, with chairs matched to the table. Some sets use real marble; others use marble-effect ceramic or stone-effect surfaces that carry much of the same visual character with different practical properties. Both are in the collection, and the distinction matters, which we cover in detail below.

Finance is available on many of our dining sets, subject to status. We deliver nationally across the UK, and if you'd like to see marble dining sets in person before you order, our Manchester showroom is open and you're welcome to come in. Marble is a material where seeing it in real light makes a genuine difference to the decision.

What's in this collection

A marble dining set is a table with a marble or marble-effect top paired with a matched set of chairs. Our marble dining tables are also available separately if you'd prefer to choose your own chairs alongside them.

Tables in the collection vary in the nature of the surface: some use genuine marble, others use marble-effect ceramic or engineered stone, which replicates the veining and tonal variation of marble with different care requirements. The base and leg styles range from contemporary metal frames to more sculptural designs, and the finish of the base, whether gold, chrome, or a darker metal tone, has a significant effect on the overall character of the set. Chair designs across the collection include upholstered options in various fabrics and more structured designs, with frame finishes chosen to work with the table.

Marble dining sets and family life

This is the section most people buying a marble dining set actually need, so it's worth being specific.

Real marble is a porous natural stone. Left unsealed, it absorbs liquids, which means spills, particularly acidic ones like wine, juice, or coffee, can stain it if they're not dealt with promptly. Heat is also a concern: placing a hot dish directly onto a marble surface can cause thermal shock or leave marks, so using a trivet or mat is necessary rather than optional. With regular sealing and careful daily use, a marble dining table holds up well and ages with a character that many people find more appealing than a surface that always looks brand new. But it does ask something of you in return for looking the way it does.

Marble-effect ceramic and engineered stone surfaces are a different proposition. They are manufactured to be non-porous, heat-resistant, and considerably more forgiving of the things that happen on a family dining table. A spill that would need immediate attention on real marble can sit on a ceramic surface without issue. These surfaces also hold their finish more consistently over time without requiring periodic sealing. The trade-off is that they are not marble: the veining and depth of a genuine marble surface has a quality that ceramic approximates but doesn't fully replicate. Whether that difference matters depends on how closely you'll be looking at it and how much the material itself means to you.

For a household with young children, a marble-effect ceramic top is the more practical choice. For a household where the dining room is used mainly for adult meals and occasional entertaining, real marble is entirely manageable with the right habits in place. The mistake is going into real marble without understanding what it asks of you, and finding out the hard way six months later.

Chair upholstery is worth thinking about alongside the table. Velvet dining chairs are a popular pairing with marble tables and the combination looks impressive, but velvet is the more high-maintenance fabric choice in a busy household. It marks more readily than most fabrics, flattens with heavy use, and needs more attention to keep looking its best. A more robust fabric seat or a wipe-clean option alongside a marble or marble-effect table is worth considering if the set is going to see daily family use.

Choosing the right size marble dining set

Marble dining sets are available across a range of seater counts. 4 seater dining sets are the most common choice for family households and suit most standard dining rooms without the table becoming the dominant feature in the space. 6 seater dining sets are worth considering if you regularly have guests or you want a table with more presence in a larger room. For bigger households or more formal dining rooms, 8 seater dining sets are available and marble or marble-effect surfaces carry well at that scale.

One practical note on size: marble and marble-effect tops are heavier than glass or most wood-effect surfaces. The weight of the table at larger sizes is worth factoring into your planning for delivery, particularly if access to your property involves stairs or tight turns. We cover that in the FAQs below.

As with any dining set, allow around 90cm of clearance between the edge of the table and the nearest wall or obstacle on all sides. If you'd like to check a specific set against your room measurements before ordering, get in touch and we'll work through it with you.

Spreading the Cost

Finance is available on many of our dining sets, subject to status. Marble dining sets sit at a higher price point than many other options, and spreading the cost can make the right set more accessible without compromising on what you actually want. We're happy to talk through the options at any point.

Why buy from Shawcross

We're based in Manchester and our showroom is open if you'd like to see marble dining sets before buying. Marble is one of the materials where a showroom visit is most worth making. The tonal variation in a marble or marble-effect surface reads very differently in real light than in product photography, and the weight and quality of the top is something you can only really assess in person. It also gives you the opportunity to see chairs alongside the table and make that decision properly rather than from separate photographs.

We deliver nationally across the UK, and you can contact us at any stage for guidance on care, room fit, measurements, or the practical differences between a real marble and marble-effect surface. Getting the right set for your household matters more than a quick sale.

Marble Dining Set FAQs

What Should I Consider When Buying a Marble Dining Set?

There are several essential factors to consider when buying a marble dining set.

  • Size and shape
You want your dining set to fit just right in your space, so take the time to measure and plan accordingly. Consider the number of chairs you'll need, and choose a shape that suits your room - round for intimate settings and rectangular for larger ones.
  • Style it up!
You don't want your new marble dining set to clash with your existing decor, so pick a design that complements your room's vibe. Mix and match if you're feeling bold, or go for a more cohesive look with matching chairs. Check out our collection for some inspiration!
  • Quality materials
Marble tables come in different materials and finishes, including polished, honed, and matte. Consider the durability of the marble and the frame - sturdy materials like metal or solid wood will ensure your table lasts for years.
  • Get comfy
Whether you're hosting a dinner party or working from home, you want to be comfortable while you sit. So when choosing chairs to accompany your new dining set, opt for ones that provide cushioned support and cosiness. Our upholstered dining chairs are just what you need!

How do I maintain my marble dining set?

It is important to take certain maintenance precautions when handling marble dining sets. Here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Sparkling clean
Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners when cleaning your marble dining set. Instead, use a soft cloth and mild soap mixed with warm water. For tougher stains, you can use a marble-specific cleaner. Make sure to dry the surface completely to prevent water damage or staining.
  • Oops, Spills
If you spill something on your marble dining set, wipe it up immediately to prevent staining. Acidic liquids like wine, vinegar, and citrus juices can etch the surface of the marble, so it's important to clean them up promptly.
  • Watch that temperature
Avoid exposing your marble dining set to extreme temperature changes, as this can cause cracks or damage to the surface.
  • Safety first
When moving your marble dining set, lift it instead of dragging it across the floor. Use coasters to prevent scratches or damage to the surface.
  • Protection & Damage
Use placemats or a tablecloth to protect your marble dining set from scratches and damage. Inspect the surface regularly for chips, cracks, or scratches, and address any damage promptly to prevent further issues. Additionally, you can use furniture wax or sealant to provide added protection and shine.

Is marble practical for a family dining table?

It can be, but it depends on which type of marble or marble-effect surface you are looking at and how your household actually uses the table. Natural marble is genuinely beautiful, and the variation in the stone means every top is slightly different. It is also porous, which means it can absorb liquids if spills are not wiped up quickly. Red wine, coffee and citrus are the ones that cause the most trouble. Sealing the surface regularly helps, but it is honest to say natural marble requires more care than most other tabletop materials.

Ceramic and sintered stone tops that replicate the marble look are a different proposition. They are non-porous, very hard, and much easier to clean. A wet cloth handles most spills and you do not need to think twice about putting a glass of juice down. For a table that is in daily use with children, many families find the ceramic or sintered option much less stressful to live with.

If the genuine marble look matters to you but you want less maintenance, it is worth looking closely at the ceramic options in person. Some are convincing enough that the difference is not obvious in the room.

What is the difference between a fixed and an extending marble dining table?

A fixed table is one piece at one size. It tends to look cleaner because there is no mechanism and no seam, and the proportions are often more refined as a result. It suits homes where you have the space for the larger table all the time and where the everyday headcount is close to the maximum capacity.

An extending table has a leaf, usually stored under the top or folded beneath the surface, that can be pulled out to increase the seating. Day to day it sits at a smaller size, which is useful in a room where space is tighter or where you mostly eat as a smaller group. When guests arrive it opens up. Most mechanisms are straightforward and take a minute at most.

The thing to check with extending tables is the extended length. Some tables add 40 or 50cm when open; others go much further. Make sure the room can accommodate the table at its full size with chairs out on all sides before you commit.

What's the difference between real marble and marble-effect?

Real marble is a natural stone quarried from the ground. Each slab is unique, with genuine veining and tonal variation that no two pieces replicate exactly. It has a depth and quality that comes from being the actual material rather than a reproduction of it. It is also porous, requires periodic sealing, reacts to acids, and needs heat protection in daily use.

Marble-effect ceramic and engineered stone surfaces are manufactured to replicate the appearance of marble. Modern production means the results are very convincing: the veining, the colour variation, and the surface texture are all designed to read as marble. These surfaces are non-porous, heat-resistant, and considerably easier to maintain. They won't stain from a spill left for an hour, and they don't require sealing.

The honest difference is that real marble has a quality that comes from being a natural material, and some people find that genuinely important. For others, a ceramic surface that looks like marble and doesn't require the same care is the better choice for how they actually use the room. If you'd like to compare the two in person, both are worth seeing in the showroom before you decide.

How does delivery work, and can I see marble dining sets in person first?

We deliver nationally across the UK. Once your order is placed you'll receive a confirmation, and we'll be in touch closer to the time to arrange a delivery date that suits you. Delivery for dining sets is typically within 28 days. Marble and marble-effect tables are heavy pieces, so if there's anything about your property worth knowing in advance, such as a narrow hallway, stairs, or restricted parking, please let us know when you order so the delivery team can prepare properly.

If you'd prefer to see marble dining sets in person before you commit, our Manchester showroom is open and you're welcome to come in without any obligation. For marble in particular, a showroom visit is strongly worth making. The quality and character of a marble or marble-effect surface is genuinely difficult to assess from photographs, and seeing it in natural light, alongside the chairs and base, makes the decision considerably easier. If you'd like to confirm whether a specific piece is currently on the showroom floor before travelling, just give us a call.
