A super king gives each person 90cm of sleeping width. That's more than a single bed each. For two adults who have been sharing a king and still drift to their own side by habit, or who are regularly aware of the boundary between their halves of the bed, a super king removes the underlying cause. Whether it's the right move depends mostly on one thing: whether the bedroom can carry a 180cm bed without the room starting to feel like it exists purely to hold the bed. Get that question settled first and the rest of the decision usually follows.
The super king mattresses here cover pocket spring, memory foam and hybrid constructions in the standard 180cm wide by 200cm long size. They sit within the full mattresses collection if you'd like to compare across all sizes. All are delivered across the UK in 7 to 14 days.
Finance is available on many mattresses, subject to status. Give us a call or come into our Manchester showroom if you'd like to talk through the options before you order.

What's in this collection

The super king mattresses here include pocket spring, memory foam and hybrid constructions.

Pocket spring uses individually wrapped coils that move independently, absorbing movement across the surface and allowing air to circulate through the mattress. This makes it the most practical choice for a shared bed: when one person turns over during the night, pocket spring absorbs that movement rather than transferring it across the full 180cm. The open structure also keeps the sleeping temperature consistent, which matters more on a larger mattress where heat can build up between two people overnight.

Memory foam and hybrid options are also included. Hybrids combine a pocket spring base with a memory foam comfort layer, giving pressure relief at the surface, particularly useful for side sleepers, while retaining the breathability and motion isolation of a spring structure. For couples where one person is a committed side sleeper and the other prefers a more responsive surface, a hybrid often serves both better than either full foam or pure spring.

Super king dimensions and room planning

A UK super king mattress is 180cm wide and 200cm long. That 200cm length is shared across all sizes from king upwards, so the difference between a king and super king is purely width: 30cm more, split between two people as 15cm each.

Once the bed frame is added, allow around 190 to 195cm of floor width as a planning guide for the assembled bed. For the room itself, a super king sits comfortably in a bedroom of around 3.5m x 4m or larger with decent clearance on both sides and at the foot. It can be fitted into a smaller room, but once you're under about 60cm on each side the room starts to feel dominated by the bed in a way that affects how the space works day to day. The most reliable check is to tape the 180cm footprint on the floor, step back, and see how much room is actually left around it.

If you're buying a mattress alongside a new frame, the super king bed frames collection shows the full options with their assembled dimensions.

Super king or king

The king is 150cm wide; the super king is 180cm. Thirty centimetres sounds modest until you work out what it means per person: each of you gains 15cm of space, which is the difference between a bed you're sharing and a bed where you each have proper room.

The honest case for choosing a king over a super king has nothing to do with the sleeping experience, where the super king wins straightforwardly. It's about the room. Many UK bedrooms are sized comfortably for a king, with clearance on both sides and at the foot that makes the room feel liveable. The same bedroom with a super king often tightens those clearances to the point where one side is against the wall or you're stepping around the foot of the bed to get to the wardrobe. If that describes your situation, the king size mattresses page is the more practical starting point.

If the room genuinely has the space, the super king is worth having. The quality of sleep for two people who each have 90cm is consistently better than for two people sharing 75cm, and once you've slept on a super king long enough for it to feel normal, going back tends not to feel like an option.

Spreading the Cost

Finance is available on many of our super king mattresses, subject to status. A super king mattress at a good specification is a meaningful purchase, and it's the kind of thing where choosing on quality rather than minimum price tends to pay off across the years of nightly use it'll get. Spreading the cost makes it easier to make that choice properly. Details are shown on each product page.

Super King Mattress FAQs

What are the dimensions of a super king mattress?

A UK super king mattress is 180cm wide and 200cm long. This is the standard across all manufacturers, so any super king mattress will fit any super king base. The size is sometimes written as 6ft, referring to the approximate width in imperial measurements.

The super king is 30cm wider than a king at 150cm and shares the same 200cm length. It's the widest standard UK mattress size. If you're measuring an existing base to confirm the size, 180cm from inside edge to inside edge confirms a super king; anything narrower is a different size.

Can I use two single mattresses instead of one super king?

Yes, and some couples specifically choose to do this. Two standard single mattresses placed side by side cover 180cm in width, the same as a super king, and the 200cm length of a king or super king base. The practical advantage is that each person can choose a different firmness level, which matters when two people have genuinely different preferences. One person sleeping on a firm mattress and the other on a medium, each on a separate mattress within the same base, is a solution that a single shared mattress can't offer.

The trade-off is the join. Two separate mattresses will have a seam between them at the centre of the bed, which some people notice when sleeping near the middle. A mattress topper placed over both mattresses can help smooth this. It's also worth checking the base design before going this route: some super king bases are built as a single platform, which suits two singles well, while others are designed specifically for one mattress. If the base has slats, check that the slat layout works for two separate mattresses positioned side by side.

Is super king bedding easy to find?

Super king bedding is a specific size and won't always be on the shelf in every shop, but it's widely available online and in larger bedding retailers. It's not a specialist or hard-to-source size, just one that requires a specific purchase rather than a trip to the nearest supermarket. A standard king duvet won't cover a super king mattress properly, so it's worth buying the correct size from the outset.

When buying fitted sheets, check the depth against the mattress. A very deep mattress needs a deep-fill fitted sheet to stay in place overnight. The mattress depth is listed in each product specification.

Will a super king mattress work on an ottoman base?

Yes. A super king ottoman base works the same way as any other ottoman: the gas-lift mechanism raises the mattress platform to give access to the storage space beneath. There's no compatibility issue with mattress type, whether pocket spring, memory foam or hybrid.

The one practical note specific to super king is weight. A 180cm mattress is considerably heavier than a double or king size. When you lift the ottoman base to access storage, the mattress lifts with it. On a well-specified gas-lift system this is manageable, but it's worth being aware of before buying, particularly if anyone using the storage is likely to find the lift effort a consideration. If you're also buying a bed frame, checking the gas-lift rating of the ottoman base against the mattress weight is a sensible step.

Super king or king: how do I make the decision?

The sleeping experience on a super king is better for two people than on a king. That part is straightforward. The decision comes down to whether the room can carry the extra 30cm of width without the space feeling compromised.

A useful way to think about it: measure the width available for the bed between any fixed points, walls, wardrobes, radiators. Subtract 190 to 195cm for the assembled super king bed. Whatever's left is split between the two sides. If each side has at least 60cm, the room works comfortably with a super king. If you're looking at 40 to 45cm on one side, it'll feel tight, and the king is likely the more practical choice for that bedroom. If one side would be under 30cm or against the wall, the super king isn't the right fit for that room regardless of how appealing the extra space sounds.

The other factor is whether both people in the bed genuinely benefit. For a couple where one person is a light sleeper easily disturbed by the other's movement, the extra width has real value every night. For a couple who sleep comfortably in a king already, the case for upgrading is weaker unless the room makes it easy to do so.

How does delivery work, and can I see mattresses in person first?

We deliver nationally across the UK. Once your order is placed you'll receive a confirmation, and we'll be in touch closer to the time to arrange a delivery date that suits you. Super king mattresses are delivered in 7 to 14 days. They arrive in protective packaging and the delivery team will bring them into your home.
